THE ASIAN AMERICAN THEATRE COMPANY, initiated by Frank Chin in San Francisco with the aid of the American Conservatory Theater in 1973, had its own little theatre, in the Richmond District, San Francisco's "new Chinatown." It produced Frank Chin's Chickencoop Chinaman (1973) and more recently Genny Lim's Paper Angels and David Hwang's F.O.B.

Contemporary Chinese American Opera and Drama

Chinese Opera performances can be seen in America today, although not on a daily basis. Opera groups in San Francisco, New York and other cities stage shows on festive occasions. Touring troupes come from Hong Kong and Taiwan and now again from mainland China. The San Francisco Universal Buddhist Church stages yearly Chinese musical dramas based on Cantonese Opera forms. The dialogue is in Chinese and English.
